The blue morph Artic fox

Early in March 2020, I ran two photography workshops on the beautiful but remote Hornstrandir nature reserve in the far north of Iceland. Cut off from the mainland, the only way to get there is by sailing over the Atlantic Ocean – which can be choppy at that time of year. A group of six and then five clients were all keen to get to this area on the edge of the arctic circle.

Armed with the heavy but beautifully built SIGMA 14-24mm F2.8 DG HSM | Art lens and the SIGMA 150-600mm F5-6.3 DG OS HSM | Sports, conditions were tough as storm force winds, heavy snow and temperatures that dipped to -22 with wind chill really put our equipment to the test. On one particular day my SIGMA 150-600mm | Sports lens and camera were frozen and covered in snow but, remarkably, the fantastic weather sealing on the lens meant it still worked fully without any issues.

My overall aim was to capture an image of the rare blue morph Arctic fox using the SIGMA 14-24mm | Art lens using a remote trigger to capture both fox and its stunning mountainous environment. I set the camera to F16 to make sure everything was in focus in the background and I waited and waited. After some time, an Arctic Fox appeared and walked right past my camera trap allowing me to snap this image. The fox was fighting its way through storm force winds and blowing snow, while the light from the sun was beautifully illuminating the mountains.
